It's not just a teenage problem. And it's almost never just a surface one.
If you're an adult dealing with acne, you probably already know it's more complicated than just washing your face more often. You've tried the products. You've read the advice. You may have been to a GP, a dermatologist, or another clinic - and still feel like you're going around in circles.
You're not imagining it. Adult acne is genuinely complex, it's more common than most people realise, and it almost never has a single cause.
At Enhance, we see clients navigating this every day. And we approach it differently to most.
Why adult acne happens

Acne in adults is rarely just about what's happening on the surface of your skin. It's a symptom - of something going on underneath, inside, or both.
Hormonal fluctuation
One of the most common drivers of adult acne - particularly in women. Breakouts along the chin, jawline, and lower face are a classic sign of hormonal involvement. Fluctuations across your cycle, around perimenopause, during or after pregnancy, or as a result of conditions like PCOS can all affect the skin's oil production and inflammatory response.
A compromised skin barrier
When the outermost layer of skin isn't functioning properly, the environment changes. The wrong bacteria can proliferate, congestion builds, and breakouts become harder to shift. Ironically, many common acne treatments - harsh cleansers, strong actives, frequent exfoliation - make this worse rather than better by further stripping the barrier.
Internal environment
Your gut, your digestion, your diet, and your stress levels all influence your skin. Digestive imbalance and toxin build-up can show up on the skin before they show up anywhere else. This is why we so often talk to clients about internal support alongside topical treatment - because no cleanser can fix what's happening at that level.
Incorrect diagnosis or treatment history
Many adult acne clients come to us having used treatments that were right for a different type of acne, a different skin type, or a different underlying cause. Getting the diagnosis right is everything - and it requires looking at the whole picture, not just the breakout in front of you.
Our approach: repair before correct
This is the most important thing to understand about how we treat acne at Enhance.
We never jump straight to corrective treatments on compromised skin. We repair the barrier first.
Think about it this way - why would you push aggressive treatments through skin that isn't healthy enough to respond to them properly? The results would be short-lived at best, and damaging at worst. We see clients who have been through rounds of strong treatments with minimal lasting results for exactly this reason.
We start by getting your barrier healthy. Calming the environment. Reducing inflammation. Building a foundation that your skin can actually work from.
What that looks like in practice:
For a typical acne client, we might begin with a customised dermaviduals cleanser and a base repair cream - nothing more. Simple, considered, and targeted to their barrier specifically.
From there we introduce Lotion P to prevent congestion building beneath the surface, alongside a customised Individual Mask for weekly home use. This mask is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and kaolin-based - drawing congestion to the surface between clinic appointments so that extractions are more effective and results compound week on week.
Once the barrier is repaired and the environment is stable, we move into the corrective phase - customised serums, internal supplements like Osmosis wellness products, and when the skin is ready - skin needling for deeper repair of scarring and texture.
The order matters. The patience pays off.
A real case study: Ash’s own skin journey
Our therapist Ash has been through this herself. She battled acne, navigated the confusion of conflicting advice, and came out the other side with the kind of understanding that only lived experience gives you. She’s shared her own treatment journey - and we think it’s one of the most honest and useful things you’ll watch if you’re dealing with acne right now.
The exact products used in Ash’s treatment plan
Every product was chosen specifically for where Ash’s skin was at each stage. Here’s exactly how the plan progressed:
Phase 1 – Repair
dermaviduals Custom Cleanser – formulated specifically for her skin, nothing that would strip or further compromise her barrier.
dermaviduals Base Cream Classic – a simple, considered moisturiser to begin rebuilding her barrier from the ground up. Two products. That was it to start.
Phase 2 – Stabilise
dermaviduals Lotion P – introduced to prevent congestion building beneath the surface as her barrier stabilised.
dermaviduals Individual Mask (customised) – used at home weekly. Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, kaolin-based and rich in minerals. Draws congestion to the surface between clinic appointments so extractions can do their job properly.
Phase 3 – Correct
Customised dermaviduals Serums – built specifically around her skin’s corrective needs once the foundation was solid.
SIMKA Alpha Omega-3 – supporting the internal environment and reducing inflammation from within.
Skin Needling – introduced only once her barrier was repaired and her skin was ready to respond. Targeting scarring, texture, and the deeper repair that topical products alone cannot reach.
Every step had a reason. Nothing was rushed. And the plan changed as her skin did. This is what a progression plan looks like in practice.
On the emotional side of acne...
We want to say something here that doesn't always get said in a clinical context.
Acne is not just a skin condition. For many people, it affects how they move through the world - what events they attend, whether they leave the house without makeup, how they feel in photographs, how confident they feel in conversations. It is physical and it is deeply personal.
We see this every day. And some of us have been through it ourselves.
When you come to Enhance, there is no judgment. No clinical detachment. No feeling like you need to minimise how much it's affecting you. We're real people who care about getting you somewhere better - and we understand that the skin result is only part of it.
You don't have to have it figured out. You just have to start.
