Australia has no mandatory pre-market approval for cosmetic ingredients. Here's what that actually means for your skin.
Our therapist Kosha has a lot to say about what’s actually going on in the Australian beauty industry - and why it matters for your skin. Before we get into the details, watch this...
Now let’s go deeper...
Clean beauty has become one of the most talked-about topics in skincare. And while it can sometimes feel like a trend, the conversation behind it is worth taking seriously - especially in Australia.
Because here's something that surprises most people when they hear it: Australia has no mandatory pre-market approval for cosmetic ingredients. Products can legally sit on Australian shelves containing ingredients that are banned or restricted in the European Union, the United States, and other countries. Nobody is checking what goes on your skin before it's sold to you.
You are the quality control.
What does 'clean beauty' actually mean?
The term gets thrown around a lot, and it means different things to different brands. Some use it as a marketing label. Others use it as a genuine formulation philosophy.
At Enhance, when we talk about clean beauty, we mean skincare that is formulated without ingredients known to disrupt the skin barrier, interfere with hormones, or cause unnecessary irritation. Products where every ingredient is there for a reason - and nothing is there just because it's cheap or extends shelf life.
It's not about being 'natural' either. Natural and clean are not the same thing. Poison ivy is natural. Arsenic is natural. What matters is whether an ingredient is safe, effective, and appropriate for the skin barrier - not where it came from.
Ingredients worth knowing about
We're not here to scare you about your current routine. But we do think everyone deserves to be informed. Here are some ingredients worth understanding:
Added fragrance
One of the most common causes of skin sensitisation and barrier disruption. Fragrance is listed as a single ingredient on a label but can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Even products marketed as 'natural' or 'botanical' can contain fragrance that irritates reactive skin.
Parabens
Used as preservatives in a wide range of skincare and cosmetic products. Research has raised questions about their potential to mimic oestrogen in the body. While the science is still evolving, many clinicians and formulators have moved away from them out of caution.
Sulphates (SLS and SLES)
Found in many cleansers and shampoos, sulphates are surfactants that create that satisfying lather - but they also strip your skin's natural lipid layer. That squeaky clean feeling after washing? That's your barrier being compromised.
Mineral oils and petrolatum
These sit on the surface of the skin and create a barrier - which can sound like a good thing, but it also blocks absorption of any products applied underneath or over the top. For skin that needs to receive active ingredients, this creates a real problem.
Artificial colours
No functional benefit for your skin. Added purely for aesthetics. A common irritant in sensitive skin formulations.
How to check what's in your products

The most accessible tool is the Think Dirty app - you can scan a barcode or search a product and see a breakdown of every ingredient and its associated concern level. EWG Skin Deep is another well-regarded resource.
The ingredient list on the back of your product is listed in order of concentration - the highest amounts first. If fragrance or a known irritant appears in the first five ingredients, that tells you something important.
And if you're ever unsure, bring your products in. We're happy to go through them with you - no judgment, just information. If something needs to change, we'll help you find something better.
What we stock and why

Every product on our shelves has been chosen with intention. Not because it looks good or because a brand representative told us to stock it - because we've looked at the formulations and believe in what they do.
Dermaviduals is our hero skincare range - a professional corneotherapy brand formulated without emulsifiers, preservatives, fragrances, or any ingredient that disrupts the skin barrier. Every product is built around the specific needs of the individual skin it's going on. Nothing unnecessary. Nothing that doesn't belong.
SIMKA follows the same philosophy - clean, plant-based, non-GMO Omega-3 supplementation and topical skincare that supports the barrier from both sides.
Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics is our makeup range of choice - mineral-based, free from pore-clogging fillers, and formulated to work with sensitive and post-treatment skin.
Clean beauty, to us, is not a label. It's a standard we hold ourselves to every time we recommend something to a client.
